Maltese Dog

One of the smallest dogs in the canine family is the Maltese show Dog. These names of the Maltese breeder have been altered from the Malts ancient dog to the Lion Dog of Maltese. It is usually considered to be part of the group of dogs known as toy dogs. There are various theories and stories as to the origin of the Maltese breeder dogs. Some claim they originated from the Mediterranean area, specifically the central area. The Maltese etymology and naming is claimed to be from the island of Malta. Malta is one of the many Mediterranean islands. Over the various years, the Maltese dog has been known for various names.

If you ask different Canine Scholars whether the Maltese is a descendant of the Spitz dog you will get varied opinion. Many however believe that the Maltese dog originated from Swiss Lake and is close relative of the Spitz dog.

General appearance

The Maltese show dogs commonly have a very distinct shape. Their skulls are evenly rounded and they have a small nose. They have notable ears that are dropping, elongated hair, and dark eyes. Also worth noting is that the nose may turn pinkish if they are not exposed to much sunlight. They may weigh roughly 5.0 kgs as adults and 3.5 kgs as puppies.

They are known to thrive in attention and these Maltese show dogs are best referred to as cuddly dogs. Playful and very energetic can best describe this toy dogs.

Uses

Maltese show dogs can best be seen at urban homes and dwellings because of their calm and homely nature. They are never anxious and can very easily lighten up a home. They can also be a great boost for children with a low self esteem or a shy personality.

Taking care

It is recommended that these toy dogs should be taken care of or groomed as regularly as possible. They have no coat under their fur and hence have little to no shedding. This makes them very ideal to people that are allergic to fur, better known as hypoallergenic.

Diseases

There is a common ailment with Maltese known as reverse sneezing. This is caused by either to much excitement, great anxiety or a lot of play. If this persists with the dog, a veterinarian who is an expert with Maltese show dogs should be consulted otherwise calming down the dog will effectively deal with this.

Cross breading

This is done in a manner so as to come up with a dog of distinct characteristics and qualities. As per the definition a cross breed is an animal or creature from the pure and distinct breeds. A good and common reason for cross breeding is to increase the resale value of Maltese show dogs. Also this helps to ensure that the buyers have a great variety of dogs to choose from and sell. Lastly, cross breeding aids in elimination of weaknesses among the distinct breeds by ensuring that the new unique breed is not prone to weaknesses in other breeds.
